Please note that the rules are strict and the competition is tough. We would not have won Mr. Gay World every year since we participated if it was not. There is no reason that we can not win it a third time – and we have to do well as Mr. Gay World 2012 happens on our shores, But - the competition is also a whole lot of fun and the experiences you will have as a finalist will stay with you forever. Each finalist automatically wins a cruise on the MSN Sinfonia from 14 - 18 Nov. 2011 and the winner wins a trip to Thailand for two, flights, taxes and accommodation included, and all 12 will win and received much, much more. The total prize value last year exceeded R400 000 ... You will also be flown to the Grand Finale, staying in five star accommodation and be wined and dined and much more. The MUST HAVE characteristics of Mr Gay South Africa™ include: 1. A healthy body and mind; 2. A successful career or study in whatever field; 3. Socially mature; 4. Excellent communication skills; 5. Must be able to carry himself in all company - gay and straight; 6. Must be able to travel and be an ambassador for the LGBTI Community in South Africa and internationally; 7. Intelligent - with a reasonable general knowledge and knowledge of gay rights issues; 8. Keen to be involved in the gay community; 9. An out-and-proud gay male South African citizen between 18 and 40 years of age; 10. Someone who enjoys life, is friendly, courteous and well-mannered and makes the best of all opportunities.

  • 1. Entrants must: - Be over 18 years and under 40 years of age. Valid documentation e.g. birth certificate or identity document reflecting proof of age must be made available to the organisers on request. Failure to do so may lead to immediate disqualification; - Be a South African citizen; - Be in possession of a matric certificate or equivalent qualification; - Be prepared to have your photograph published in the press; - Be prepared to attend promotions for Mr. Gay South Africa™ and sponsors from date of entry; - Be prepared to model in clothing supplied including bathing costumes; - Not enter any other competitions whatsoever for the year and if you are the winner, until the end of your reign. - Sign a contract with Mr. Gay South Africa (Pty) Ltd. once you qualify as a semi-finalist. 2. Entries must be accompanied by three (3) photographs: one head & shoulder, one bare torso and one full length photograph in colour. Underwear must be Bone Wear, or unmarked. No logo may be seen if not Bone Wear. No Photoshop or altered photographs will be accepted – it must be as natural as possible. Studio photos are acceptable as long as it is not altered. 3. An entry fee of R 280.00 is payable as soon as your entry has been confirmed. Payment must be made latest at the end of the month directly following your entry or your entry will be disqualified. 4. All finalists must commit themselves to act as a representative of the Mr. Gay South Africa (Pty) Ltd pageant and assist with the organising of the Mr. Gay South Africa™ pageant in their region. Thus including: - finding sponsors, entrants and other duties regarding Mr. Gay South Africa™. 5. The judges' decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. 6. Prizes are not exchangeable for a cash value. 7. The organisers will not be held responsible for any loss or damage whatsoever related to the competition before or after the competition or for whatever reason. Entrants enter the competition at own risk. 8. Contestants who do not comply with these rules will automatically be disqualified. 9. Contestants give the organisers full consent to check any personal credit, annual or any other records. 10. Contestants give consent that their photographs, detail, names, identity, electronic likeness may be used by Mr. Gay South Africa (Pty) Ltd. before and after the competition in media, website, internet or any other communications. 11. The company will all times endeavour that sponsors deliver prizes. However, Mr. Gay South Africa (Pty) Ltd. can not be held responsible for any prizes not delivered or not delivered on time. 12. The directors reserve the right to disqualify any contestant who brings the company Mr. Gay South Africa (Pty) Ltd. or the competition Mr. Gay South Africa™ into disrepute in whatever way, refuses to carry out instructions or do not abide by the rules, stated here and/or stated during and after the competition.
  • 13. You will have to be available for the following dates: - Jhb Pride weekend: 1 Oct. 2011; - Gay cruise to Mozambique: from 13 Nov. to 18 Nov. Cruise itself 14 – 18 Nov., 13th spent in Durban. - Rehearsals in Jhb on Fri. 25 Nov. and the Grand Finale on 26 Nov. If you can not attend any of these dates, you will not be able to participate as important judging takes place on these dates. 14. You must have a valid passport. If no passport copy can be provided by semi-final stage, you will be disqualified and the next on the list will take your place. Apply for one now if you do not have one. 15. Once your entry has been received, you will receive an e-mail requesting certain further measurements to be used for sponsored clothing. Get a tape measure ready and provide the details as soon as possible. Do not fill in what you think – let someone help you and write down the detail in centimetres. 16. You will be asked some questions on the entry form regarding gay rights issues. Think about it before you answer. You can not Google it – use your own words. Your answer will be checked and if found to be plagiarised, you will be disqualified.
  • 17. There will be no regional finals. Independent judges will select 24 (twenty four) semi-finalists who will be announced by 15 August 2011. From these, the public will be able to choose one by SMS who will go through directly as the most popular semi-finalist. Eleven others will be chosen by judges after interviews during August and September 2011. The final eleven together with the public’s choice winner will make up the twelve finalists for 2011 that will have to be at Jhb Pride on 1 Oct., on the cruise and at the weekend for the Grand Finale, including Fri 25 Nov. 2011. (See 13 above). 18. Transport and air flights will be provided to the 12 finalists only and only if sponsored. The semi-finalists will have to be able to travel to Johannesburg for their interviews. If at all possible, interviews will be done in Cape Town, Nelspruit and/or Durban, but only if sponsorships are found. 19. Any semi-finalist or finalist who withdraws from the competition or who is disqualified, will have to repay all expenses incurred on his behalf, as well as return all prizes, and pay damages to the company, which damages is agreed at as being a minimum of R5000.00. 20. You are not to contact with any supplier, sponsor, agent, employee or anyone other than the director concerned with contestants or as otherwise directed. 21. All 24 semi-finalists will have to have an amateur video made of themselves of not less than one minute and not longer than 1 min 30 seconds and to be put on Youtube which will be used by the public to vote and the judges together with your interview to determine who the 11 other finalists will be. Assistance in this regard will be given to those who need it as far as is possible. 22. In the video, you must be shown at least once in swimwear and you must answer the question: “Why do you want to be Mr. Gay South Africa™?”. 23. A shortlist of three candidates from the semi-finalists will be drawn up as alternates should any of the finalists not proceed to the final. An aggregate of SMS votes will then be allocated to the alternate. However, no replacements will be done after the cruise as most of the judging takes place on the cruise.

  • Declaration and Indemnification: I declare that the information I have provided herein is true and correct in every aspect. I agree that the Rules above and below are binding on me in the build-up to and including my participation in the Mr. Gay South Africa™ competition (named “competition” hereafter). I agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless Mr. Gay South Africa (Pty) Ltd. (the “company”) and each of its respective shareholders, officers, directors, managers, sponsors, venues, employees and agents, from and against any and all losses, liabilities, injuries, damages, medical fees and any other costs and expenses which I may incur as a result of my participation in the competition. I further agree that my participation in the competition and all its activities is undertaken by myself on a purely voluntary basis and I have, in no way, been coerced to participate in such activity by any of the shareholders, officers, directors, managers, sponsors, employees and agents of the company and is done wholly at my own risk. I agree not to bring the pageant or festival into disrepute at risk of disqualification. I agree that should I withdraw after being announced as a semi-finalist or finalist, I will have to return all prizes or the value thereof, as well as repay expenses incurred on my behalf as well as damages, which is agreed upon to be a minimum of R5000.00 (five thousand Rand) which is to be paid within one calendar month of me withdrawing. I consent and agree to pay for my own transport to the interviews in Johannesburg should that be required. I agree and understand that by submitting my completed application does not guarantee me as a contestant, semi-finalist or finalist or in no way whatsoever compels the selection panel or the company to select or confirm me as a contestant, semi-finalist or finalist. I accept the judges’ and company’s decision as final and binding on me and will have no recourse against any result.
